Joseph's Story

The 1850 Census shows that Joseph lives at home on a farm in Mahoning, PA with his parents and siblings; he works as a farm laborer. The 1860 Census shows no change in location or work.

In 1861 Joseph (30) marries Mary Margaret Whiting. The following year he joins Calvary Company B of the Pennsylvania 14 Regiment and heads into Civil War battle. Joseph serves from 30 October 1862 to 31 July 1865 when this First Sargent was discharged for chronic diarrhea.

After the Civil War the 1870 Census indicates that Joseph is a farmer in Mahoning Township, PA, living with his wife and three young children. His personal property is valued at $800.

The 1880 Census shows that the family has moved to Hubbard in Turnbull County, Ohio where both Joseph and his son work as farm labor. Wife Margaret and two younger daughters are at home.

In 1890 a special census of veterans was taken. It seems to indicate that Joseph is back in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, PA, although it could be an indication of where he registered for the draft.

Joseph died in 1900 in Hubbard, Trumbull County, Ohio and is buried in the Hubbard Union Cemetery. Wife Margaret lived another 31 years in Hubbard where she is presumably buried.
